A Winter Celebration of Brightness + Creativity

Coyote Central and Seattle Happy Places ran a community-driven initiative called Seattle Happy Lights in the winter of 2020. It was an invitation to create luminarias to lighten one's windows during the shortest days of the year, be in community with each other, and contribute to happy places and neighborhoods.

Inspired by the designs of students in Coyote Central’s CRE8 2 cohort, Coyote provided luminaria kits to the public, leading up to a virtual luminaria celebration on December 20th, 2020.

Luminarias kits

The CRE8 students put so much time and energy into creating their luminarias. Throughout the week leading up to the event, we will be releasing each student's project and a little bit about them.

Kits available for pick-up at Coyote had varying supplies based on the design. All kits included a white bag, jar, battery-powered tea light, and a balloon.

There was a suggested donation of $5-15 per kit. Any excess funds will go to an organization selected by the CRE8 students.

No one was turned away for lack of funds!

Adele

Adele (she/her) is a 12 year old artist from Washington Middle School. Her favorite medium is drawing because it's a calming and fun way to express yourself. Her favorite winter activity is sledding.

Ananda

Ananda (she/they) is a 13 year old artist from Lake Washington Girls Middle School. Her favorite medium is pencils and colored pencils because she likes to play around with shading and drawing human body parts like hearts, eyes, and tongues. She likes making things glossy. Their luminary is inspired by butterflies because of their love for natural things.

Dash

Dash (he/him) is a 12 year old artist from Washington Middle School. His favorite medium is baking and cooking because he enjoys providing and caring for people. He likes polar bears.
